This year is the third year of organizing VISUAREKAN, this activity has embryos appeared on campus but to this day has developed further into a platform for media art exhibitions. In the 3 years of implementation, the visualization has a constantly changing format, this is done as a form of visual adaptation to the situation that occurs. The first VISUAREKAN was held offline in 2019, then continued in 2020 with an online strategy as a tactic for the pandemic, and in 2021 it was carried out in a hybrid (online and offline). The adaptive form carried out by the VISUAREKAN makes the boundaries of their activities even more blurred, and there are more possibilities that can be explored by the organizers and artists involved.
The emergence of VISUAREKAN as a media art exhibition platform in Surabaya, has become an important point for the development of media art in Surabaya. In the last decade, the practice of art in Surabaya has become very diverse, this is due to the large amount of information and experiments carried out by artists as a form of response to the city. Surabaya, which has a branding as an industrial city, is fertile ground for the development of experimental art practices.
This year, VISUAREKAN collaborated with the East Java Biennale 9 to further encourage the practice of media art in Surabaya, by presenting many works of media art from national and international artists. This push can be read as a very positive follow-up effort. With so many artistic practices emerging in Surabaya, there will be more mediums to explore the potentials and problems that exist in the city. Aesthetic achievement is indeed a very important thing, but the discourse that is built regarding urban discourse must also be considered. Hopefully, in the future, VISUAREKAN can be an accelerator to achieve this.
