As Project Director

  • Project narrative :

Mapping the art scene in East Java is not enough if it is only done on the scope of painting and older or experienced artists who have a big name in the art scene. The behavior of art now has shifted greatly when compared to art 10 or 20 years ago, with the rapid development of social media, art forms from urban culture enter East Java such as murals or graffiti freely, art that directly intersects with the community because of the placement of these works which are usually carried out in public places, so that the barrier between the community in general and a work is thinner when compared to the practice of art on painting media on canvas and must be placed in a certain exhibition space for the appreciation process. But that does not mean that one is better and the other is worse, it is very relative.

In the last five years, apart from the big cities in East Java such as Surabaya or Malang, graffiti and murals have grown rapidly, and this phenomenon cannot be left unchecked, it must be captured and given the right stimulus so that it will have a positive impact on the scope of the area they occupy.
Coca colabs is a collaboration project that will be carried out by sawdust with mural or graffiti communities from the cities of Jember, Nganjuk, Jombang, Tuban, Sidoarjo. The selection of mural or graffiti communities by sawdust to do the collaboration project is based on the intensity of work and movement that can be monitored through social media.

In this collaboration project, Serbuk Kayu will challenge itself and the 5 other communities involved to respond to the theme “Profitorial” the theme is a translation of the big theme of the East Java binnale “art ecosystem”. Profitorial itself is a combination of words derived from “profit” which means profit, and territorial which means territory, we (Serbuk Kayu) consider that in an ongoing ecosystem there will always be profits and losses simultaneously because it is the result of what we do in an ecosystem itself, what is addressed is the reason why a street art group continues to carry out its actions militantly, Here we can conclude that in every action they take will lead to profitable results for the perpetrators and appreciators, therefore street art activities are still going on today, but keep in mind that material is not a barometer of the benefits obtained by these street art actors, so this is what powder will translate into visual form by collaborating with Dimitri Studio from Jember, Nuas from Nganjuk, JSC (Jombang Street Culture) from Jombang, Sugo from Sidoarjo, and Pemuda Harapan Kampung from Tuban.
When collaborating with communities from different regions, the result is a different visual form that refers to the situation they face with regional conditions and problems faced in their respective regions.
