Everything in this world must have a beginning and an end, a long or straight winding road, will be beautiful or easy it is a provision that to each choice has a basic consequence of a belief. The early history of man from the religious side is a creation of worldly complexity that is summarized in the form of soil which is then breathed into it.
The name of the first man was “Adam”, the first man whose nature will be passed down to his children later, in the mytology of the initial creation of man Adam felt lonely and then created “Eve” who became Adam’s life companion as a partner. Long story short after they lived beautiful days in paradise Adam and Eve got the initial stumbling block that determined the fate of humans forever, tempted them by Satan to violate the restrictions given by God for this pair of humans, God allowed them to do anything in his beautiful paradise just don’t come close (eat the fruit of quldi) the tree of immortality. In the end they were consumed by Satan’s seduction and ate the fruit of quldi so that all the desires of Adam and Eve were opened, knowing that the rules had been violated, Adam and Eve were punished by being dropped to Earth.
Broadly speaking, the story of Adam, Eve, and the fruit of quldi is a term that is close to the Abrahamic religions, namely: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. In these three religious books, Adam, Eve and the fruit of the Quldi are discussed with the same story sequence. However, the Biblical and Quranic accounts of creation take completely different forms. But what seems to make us curious is what exactly is the fruit of Quldi? Why did God forbid Adam and Eve to eat it. Religiously, the Quldi Fruit is never described as an explicit form of fruit, it is said to be a fruit because it refers to Satan’s incitement that leads to the tree of immortality becoming and symbolizing the fruit of the deliberate actions of Adam and Eve.
There is a limit in the form of rules, which makes early humans slip and make mistakes. The limit is the perfection that becomes the reference to be reached, which will be very different in each individual depending on what variable determines the perfection, the discourse finally becomes a limit that binds to the variables of religion, culture, or knowledge is a shackle of perfection that humans must pass. The greatest victory or defeat must be reaffirmed in a special liturgy, year after year as a binder and reminder of man.
Humans will become fully human when they are able to be grounded and feel their surroundings, build a civilization and culture, the blessings of lust and reason that are faintly read in the interpretation of the fruit of quldi are human nature that must be controlled, with all the discourse of freedom regarding mortal humans, perfection, lust, reason, and all human nature are not about numbers or shapes. Therefore, if we get stuck on number or form we will face a culture that will always be destroyed as a vulnerable achievement, which can always fall victim to disruptive and divisive forces.
Unilaterally humans have the right to interpret or interpret a form and the cause of its occurrence in books or anything that refers to the fruit of kuldi, many visual or verbal approaches that humans make about the fruit of quldi, the first is fig for the reason that many cultures and books mention that fig is a forbidden fruit, secondly grapes, with the approach that adam and hawa are released from all their desires, what is meant in the release of desire is when they are drunk and grapes are the fruit most often used for this, The third is tomatoes in some Slavic languages tomatoes are called ‘rajcica’ or ‘paradajz’ both have the meaning of heaven, the fourth is apples because in the approach using English there is the term ‘adam’s apple’ which means male Adam’s Adam’s apple, it is said that the story of the fruit was stuck in Adam’s throat, the fifth is wheat because in Hebrew the name of wheat is ‘khitah’ which is similar to ‘khet’ which means sin, the story says that the quldi tree used to be as big as a palm tree and its fruit was as big as a bull’s kidney but because it was eaten by humans it cursed the wheat to be small.
The shape of a trait is a form of conclusion agreed upon by many people (society) so that it is realized and gets such a name, but in many cases where the name of an object has been bestowed by the Creator, and it is beyond human control and must be accepted as a form of visual grace.
The response to a mythology that has a long history regarding something written in the holy books is a form of responsibility that can be imposed on a community or individual. No one should be blamed or justified because it is all a matter of point of view and mindset that is impossible to be uniformed in a framework of thought. Trying to interpret it in the form of visual forms, literacy, performance or other forms of art is very beautiful when done with the depth of the work, reading works that bring out the artist’s interpretation of this supposedly very religious thing.
The works and interpretations of the khuldi fruit will be presented in this exhibition, in the form of visuals, literacy, or performances by the Serbuk Kayu community at the exhibition held at the House of Sampoerna, Surabaya. Each work will display a different message, displaying different meanings as a result of the artist’s interpretation of the khuldi fruit and how the artists from the Serbuk Kayu community love or believe in this mytological story from their point of view.
Don’t be blinded by conventions, step outside for a while to see from the other side, don’t be trapped by meaning because meaning is not a dead point.
